This hand-crafted prototype timber sign has been commissioned by the Bethanga Landcare Group to highlight significant trees around the township and surrounding hills. The various native species of trees in this region can have subtle variations, and subsequently can be hard to distinguish.
Calvert & Co has therefore created a clear identification diagram showing the trees leaf shape, fruit and flower, as well as information about the multitude of wildlife species that often use these trees as their home. One of the Landcare members likened the new sign to the monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey
and so the term 'graphic monolith' has now stuck!
The sign has been created with the second phase of the project in mind, which may feature a children's nature trail game. These future graphic panels can be positioned further down the sign at a child's eye level. The materials have been carefully chosen, simply using sustainably sourced wood and aluminium – both of which can be re-used or easily recycled at the end of their working life.
